Condensation: identify which surface is wet

Interior, exterior and between-pane condensation have different causes and next steps.

Condensation: identify which surface is wet
Visual planning reference

At a glance

01

Interior surface

Often connected to indoor humidity, outdoor temperature and limited warm-air circulation.

02

Exterior surface

Can occur when efficient glass becomes cooler than humid outdoor air.

03

Between panes

Persistent moisture inside a sealed glass unit requires product review.

The useful decision

Interior, exterior and between-pane condensation have different causes and next steps.

01

Locate the moisture

Interior-surface moisture often relates to indoor humidity and cold weather. Exterior condensation can occur on efficient glazing under certain conditions. Moisture between sealed panes may indicate a glazing concern.

02

Record conditions

Note outdoor temperature, indoor humidity, room, time of day, window-covering position and whether ventilation is operating.

03

Ask for help when needed

Persistent moisture, staining, leakage during rain or between-pane fogging should be documented and reviewed. Condensation should not be diagnosed from a photograph without context.

Bring this to the conversation

Project checklist

  • Identify the exact surface where moisture appears.
  • Record indoor humidity and outdoor temperature.
  • Open coverings and confirm ventilation is operating.
  • Photograph persistent fogging, staining or rain-related leakage.

Avoid assumptions

Questions worth answering

  1. Is moisture inside, outside or between panes?
  2. Does it occur during cold weather, after showers or during rain?
  3. Are blinds, curtains or furniture restricting air movement?
